what to do after
your microtreatment

For the best results post-treatment, there are some important dos and don’ts to keep in mind. For one hour following your treatment, you may try to exercise the treated muscles—by smiling, frowning, raising your eyebrows, or squinting—to help the Botox/Dysport work itself in. Although thought to help, there won’t be a negative impact if you choose not to do this.

For the first four hours following treatment, you should avoid lying down flat. This will prevent the Botox/Dysport from tracking into undesired, untreated areas. Any activity involving strain, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or yoga and pilates should be avoided for 24-48 hours, and—to minimize bruising— it’s best to avoid facials or saunas for one day. Lastly, it’s incredibly important that you don’t manipulate the treated area with laser treatments or microdermabrasion for two days following treatment.

Please note that it can take approximately 4-7 days for results to be seen and up to 14 days for full response, so patience is everything. If you’re not experiencing your desired result after 10 days, please call us so that we may address.

What to expect during and immediately after your treatment: Mild tenderness, a stinging sensation, bruising, minimal to moderate swelling, and a firm feeling in the treated area for the first few days. To help minimize bruising, you should inform your Alchemy Specialist if you use blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or herbal preparations (Fish Oil, high dose Vitamin D, Ginko, Ginseng, Garlic, or Vitamin E) prior to your procedure.

Apply a cool compress to the area(s) to reduce swelling, while carefully avoiding pressure or direct contact between your skin and ice or frozen packs (repeat as needed). You are free to apply makeup once any bleeding has subsided, or visit our makeup touch-up room to have an Alchemy Specialist do it for you. To avoid excess manipulation, do not rub or massage the treated area(s), and be sure to use gentle sweeping motions when cleansing your face.

Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for 24 hours following treatment, as increased blood flow can increase bruising, but you’re free to resume normal activities after that time. If you experience mild tenderness or discomfort, you make take Tylenol (acetaminophen). Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen products, as they may increase the potential to bruise. Drinking alcohol and eating salty foods should also be avoided for 12 hours following treatment, as they can worsen swelling and bruising.

If you experience swelling, sleep facing up with your head slightly elevated. Extended UV exposure should be avoided until any redness or swelling has fully subsided. Topical or oral Arnica can be taken to avoid bruising immediately after treatment. Depending on your treatment, we recommend waiting a minimum of two weeks before receiving an active laser or skincare treatment. Be sure to inform your physician of your dermal filler treatment before undergoing another cosmetic procedure.

What to expect during and after your treatment: Redness, swelling, or bruising. If symptoms persist for more than a couple of weeks, please call our office.

Ice the area carefully, for no more than 15 minutes at a time, and be sure to keep a cloth between your skin and the ice or frozen pack. A cold compress may also be applied for a few days following your treatment. Strenuous exercise and activity should be avoided for the first few days following your injections.

Sleep with your head elevated to avoid additional swelling. To avoid further irritation, do not massage the area for the first four days after being injected. You may take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as instructed, and Arnica gel may be applied as needed for bruising.
